UntoldStories

Empowering Communities through Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

The Wangjing Women and Girls Society (WWAGS) is dedicated to fostering community empowerment and economic independence through Social Mobilization and Institution Building. Our efforts are concentrated in two Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Manipur: Lilong Imphal West and Lilong Thoubal. By promoting Self-Help Groups (SHGs), we aim to create a sustainable model for community development and upliftment.

Our mission is to empower women and marginalized communities by organizing them into SHGs, fostering a spirit of self-reliance and mutual support. Through collective action, we aim to enhance their social and economic status, providing them with the tools and resources needed to improve their livelihoods.

What We Do

1. Formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

We facilitate the formation of SHGs, bringing together women and community members with common socio-economic backgrounds. These groups provide a platform for collective savings, lending, and income-generating activities.

2. Capacity Building and Training

WWAGS conducts regular training programs to enhance the skills and capabilities of SHG members. Our training includes financial literacy, entrepreneurship development, leadership skills, and business management. We aim to equip members with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their groups effectively and undertake income-generating activities.

3. Financial Inclusion

We work towards ensuring financial inclusion by linking SHGs with banks and financial institutions. This enables members to access credit and other financial services, which are crucial for starting and expanding their businesses.

4. Promoting Livelihood Activities

WWAGS supports SHGs in identifying and undertaking various livelihood activities that are sustainable and profitable. These activities include agriculture, handicrafts, small-scale manufacturing, and service-based enterprises. By promoting diversified income sources, we aim to enhance the economic stability of SHG members.

5. Institutional Support

We provide continuous support and guidance to SHGs to ensure their sustainability and growth. This includes regular monitoring, mentorship, and facilitating linkages with government schemes and programs.

Our Impact

Through our focused efforts in Lilong Imphal West and Lilong Thoubal, we have successfully mobilized numerous SHGs, fostering a strong sense of community and economic empowerment. Our work has led to:

  1. Increased income and improved livelihoods for SHG members.

  2. Enhanced social cohesion and support networks within communities.

  3. Greater financial independence and decision-making power for women.

  4. Improved access to financial services and resources.
